01 · The decision
There is no useful universal winner here.
The sub-$1,000 market splits into three clear jobs. Rapsodo makes the strongest case for data-rich practice and swing video. Square is the more logical starting point for a compact dedicated indoor simulator. Garmin remains compelling when portability and a lower entry price matter more than squeezing the most from indoor tracking.
A golfer with a 12-foot-deep garage and a golfer who practices outdoors every weekend should not receive the same recommendation. A single winner would make the headline simpler and the buying advice worse.

Rapsodo MLM2PRO
The strongest sub-$1,000 choice when your priority is practice data plus automatic swing/impact video and you are willing to pay for the software layer.
Rapsodo currently lists 15 metrics with eight measured metrics, including measured spin rate and spin axis when used with RPT balls, plus club path and angle of attack. Premium also unlocks 30,000+ simulated courses, third-party compatibility and additional analysis features.
Good fit if
- practice feedback and video matter
- you want one unit for indoor and outdoor use
- your indoor room has enough radar depth
Skip it if
- you hate recurring memberships
- your simulator room is short
- you do not want special RPT balls for measured spin
Manufacturer specIndependent evidence Current Rapsodo pricing and Premium terms were checked in September 2026. MyGolfSpy's published testing has also treated the MLM2PRO as a strong accuracy performer in this budget class.
Square Golf Home Edition
The cleaner choice when the purchase is primarily for an indoor simulator and room depth is more important than portability.
Square changes the buying equation because it does not rely on the same rear-mounted radar corridor as Garmin or Rapsodo. That is a real architectural advantage in a compact room, even though Square has a shorter independent track record than older platforms.
Good fit if
- you are building a dedicated indoor simulator
- room depth is limited
- you want camera-based tracking at this price
Skip it if
- range use matters
- you want the longest independent testing history
- you have not checked the exact software economics you plan to use
Manufacturer specEditorial analysis Square's official US product page currently lists the HE at $699. We treat small-room fit as a placement advantage, not as permission to ignore safe swing and screen clearances.
Garmin Approach R10
Still relevant when you want a compact unit that can move between the driving range and a sufficiently deep home setup.
Garmin continues to support the R10 ecosystem. In January 2026 it launched a new standalone Home Tee Hero app with more than 43,000 courses for R10 users. The compromise remains physical: indoor radar placement requires meaningful room depth, so the R10 is not automatically the best choice simply because it is compact in your hand.
Good fit if
- portability is a priority
- you practice outdoors as well as at home
- you have enough indoor depth
Skip it if
- you are building a short indoor bay
- measured spin is central to your purchase
- your only use is a permanent simulator
Manufacturer spec Garmin's 2026 Home Tee Hero update confirms continued R10 support and 43,000+ courses. We are intentionally not presenting a temporary retailer sale price as the permanent hardware price.
03 · Ownership cost
$699 and $699 can be very different purchases.
The hardware sticker is only the first line of the budget. Instead of publishing a fake universal three-year total, we separate required and optional costs.
45-day Premium trial, then $199.99/year, $329.99/two years or $599.99 lifetime if you want the Premium feature set. RPT balls are required for measured spin metrics.
No rear-radar space requirement. Check the current credit/software model for the exact simulation workflow you plan to use.
Core hardware plus optional simulator/software subscriptions. RCT balls can improve the indoor spin workflow.
*Rapsodo official US site showed a $599.99 sale price against $699.99 regular price when checked September 2026.
How we evaluate
Our under-$1,000 methodology.
We compare room fit, tracking architecture, measured versus calculated data, indoor/outdoor use, simulator compatibility and ownership cost. Manufacturer documentation is used for specifications and pricing. Independent test evidence is treated separately from manufacturer claims.
We do not award points for a longer feature list if those features sit behind a subscription the buyer may not want. We also do not call a product “small-room friendly” simply because the hardware itself is small.
