Room planning guide · Updated September 2026

Golf simulator room dimensions.

There is no single magic room size. Width controls swing freedom. Height controls driver clearance. Depth controls the screen, hitting position and which launch-monitor technologies actually fit.

WidthSwing + handednessControls lateral clearance and shared left/right-handed use.
Ceiling heightDriver clearanceThe player, club and swing determine what is safe.
DepthScreen + trackingControls hitting position and whether rear-mounted radar fits.
Editorial note. These dimensions are planning guidance, not universal safety certification. Follow current requirements for your exact enclosure, screen, projector and launch monitor.

01 · Quick answer

Start with three dimensions, then test your swing.

A useful simulator plan is not simply “10 × 10 × 10.” It is a chain of clearances. Your room must contain the screen and enclosure, leave a safe hitting position, accommodate tracking technology and still give the golfer an unrestricted driver swing.

FirstMeasure the room

Use the narrowest width, lowest obstruction and actual usable depth.

ThenMap the system

Screen buffer, hitting position, monitor, projector and cables.

FinallyTest the swing

Use the tallest intended player and driver.

A reference, not a universal minimum.

Compact commercial simulator packages can begin around 8 ft deep × 10 ft wide × 9 ft high for specific configurations. That does not make those dimensions safe or compatible for every golfer and every simulator.

02 · Depth

Depth is where technology starts changing the room.

Depth must absorb screen clearance, ball-to-screen distance, the golfer's hitting position and, for some launch monitors, tracking space behind the ball.

A small rear-radar device can require a longer room than a physically larger camera-based monitor beside the ball. Hardware size and room requirement are not the same thing. See our small-room launch monitor guide.

03 · Ceiling height

The ceiling number is personal.

Some commercial packages publish 9 ft as a minimum for specific configurations. That is not proof that every golfer can safely swing a driver beneath a 9 ft ceiling.

Do not test with an iron only.

Use the tallest intended player and longest club. Check backswing and follow-through at the actual hitting position.

04 · Width

Width determines where the golfer can stand.

A centered hitting position is ideal for shared right/left-handed use. Narrow rooms often force the ball off-center. Enclosure framing and side protection also consume width, so wall-to-wall width is not the same as clear swing width.

05 · Launch monitor fit

The monitor adds a second set of dimensions.

Research framework

Why we avoid one universal minimum.

Simulator dimensions come from multiple systems: golfer swing, enclosure and screen clearances, launch-monitor tracking geometry and projector placement. Manufacturer package dimensions are evidence for a specific configuration, not a universal standard.

The Golf Rig separates manufacturer-published requirements from editorial planning guidance. When a reliable universal minimum does not exist, we do not invent one.
